P.E. Credit Waiver
The P.E. Credit Waiver Is Not Available For Men's Lacrosse
The AISD Physical Education Department enacted new requirements in 2007, which make P.E. waivers extremely difficult to obtain. As a club sport, we do not have the resources to meet these new requirements, some of which are listed below:
- 5 hours practice and 2 classroom sessions per week throughout the entire semester
- 90% attendance – documented by coaches
- Inclement weather plans (no bad weather cancellations)
- Fully documented curriculum for each grade
- Weekly written assignments on a subject mandated by A.I.S.D – graded by coaches
- “Certified” Coaches (There is no certification program readily available for lacrosse coaches)
- The list continues with other requirements that go far beyond our coaches’ job descriptions
This being said, our players are required to fulfill all of their P.E. credits through P.E. classes, other sports, marching band, or a P.E. waiver through an agency on AISD’s Approved Agency List (accessible at www.austinisd.org). Since classes are already scheduled, a change must be requested IF your son wants to enroll in a P.E. class for the 2008-2009 school year. It is helpful if parents contact the boy's counselor and make the change for them. If the boys have been out of a P.E. class for more than a year, the school requires them to enter into a foundations class. The other options are cross country or swimming (which could be a zero hour class), please check with the coaches of those programs for details and the tryout process. You can check with the counselor to see what other options are available. It would be in your best interest to handle this prior to the beginning of school. Class selections are a much bigger challenge to get changed after the school year starts. Each student is required to have 3 semesters of P.E. (or P.E. equivalent) for graduation. So juniors and seniors, please make sure that you will have all the P.E. credits that you need to graduate and enough time in your schedule to work them in. |
